HOME DECORATING AND MONEY SAVING TIPS

Do-It-Yourself Touch-ups To Make Your Items Look Good, Longer:

REMOVING WET RINGS FROM A FINISHED WOOD SURFACE: You know those rings left on your beautiful wood from a glass that was moist? Clean the area with Oil soap (found in the cleaning supplies section of your local grocery store) and water; use terry cloth or a t-shirt and dampen it lightly with DENATURED ALCOHOL. Pass the dampened cloth across the area, using light, quick strokes. #0000steel wool and lemon oil should remove white spots and rings from units that have a stain or dull sheen. Be careful to go lightly or you will remove the varnish under the ring.

REMOVING SURFACE SCRATCHES ON YOUR WOOD FURNITURE: Use rubbing compound or buffing paste and follow that with a cream polish.

A QUICK COVER UP FOR SCRATCHES AND SMALL CHIPS ON MOST FURNITURE AND MANY DARK COLORED FINISHES: A black permanent marker will do wonders on light scratches and chips on any surface that has a black under coat or has spatter distressed spots. Have a paper towel handy. Dot or lightly fill-in the spot with the marker and then dab at it to blend it into the finish with the paper towel. Don't wait too long, as the marker becomes permanent when dry and then can't be blended. To obtain a better match on colored surfaces, you can purchase a set of colored permanent markers with fine tipe. A large marker selection will have most of the colors you may need. Use these to cover chips and scratches on your painted surfaces. Even vinyl shoe scuffs and scratches on leather can be matched to cover. Make SURE that you test in an inconspicuous area first to see how closely your match is.

Six Easy Home Make-over Ideas:

1) Paint a dull or unlit area a soft buttery yellow for an instant touch of sunshine, or make a busy area tranquil with a pale sage green. Bring your new color around the area in coordinated lampshades, photo or picture frames, wicker baskets and flower pots.

2) Rearrange your furniture. Sometimes just repositioning a table or chair near a window so that you can look out can completely change the ambience of the room. Hang a mirror so that it reflects light back into the room. This can light up a dark area or, if hung across from a window, can bring the outdoors inside.

3) Frame a large poster for big impact on a bare or really large wall. Museum stores and art galleries can be good sources for these. Buy one for each season or holiday that you celebrate the first year and then continue to change the look often. Make sure that you buy posters from the places you travel to. These make great souvenirs and will bring back fond memories every day.

4) Inexpensive accessories in bright colors will add zing to your everyday décor. Get new place mats on the dinner table, new candles in the living room, new towels and oven mitts in the kitchen, etc. These don't need to be be expensive; the bright strong colors will do the work for you.

5) Eliminate the clutter. This will instantly make the room look bigger and also make it easier to clean. Donate the items you no longer need to a charity or an organization like Goodwill. Get a receipt and make a tax deduction for your donation. That way you can actually get PAID for cleaning up your own house!

6) Freshen your silk plants. Your shower is the best source for cleaning. You can do this with hanging plants and trees, as well as smaller potted plants. Wash them as often as you feel necessary - at least once a year. There is no need for soap or any other household products. Just turn on your shower with a warm gentle spray and let it do the work. All the dirt and dust just rinses away and the "plants" look like new. Make sure you drain any water from the pots and let the plants dry thoroughly before placing them back in their normal place.
